We had 19 boats with 32 members and 2 guests fishing the fifth tournament of the year at Vantage.   This was the third club tournament on Vantage.  The prior two were in 1999 and 2001.  The catch was significantly better in 2016 than the prior two tournaments.   We had warm weather ( 100 degrees on Saturday and the upper 90's on Sunday ) with mild winds both days ( there were some strong winds Sunday morning in the Creasant Bar area).  The water temperature ranged from the upper 60's to the mid 70's.  Saturday saw 7 or 8 boats fishing between the bridge and the Wanapum Dam with the remainder of the boats heading north towards Creasant Bar.  Sunday only 3 or 4 boats fished between the bridge and Wanapum Dam with the remainder of the boats fishing north of the launch at Vantage.
Dwayne Lyons won with 24.6 pounds anchored by his 14.65 pound bag on Sunday.  This was his second tournament win in a row.   Dwayne's motor went out on Saturday and he was restricted to running at 1500 rpm's.  His brother took his boat home Saturday night and Dwayne fished with Ty Watterson on Sunday.  Dwayne fished between the state park and the bridge on Saturday and Sunday throwing tubes  and swim baits.  His fish came shallow and also between 25 and 32 feet.
Finishing second was Gerald Dunn.  Gerald had a great bag of 19.8 pounds, with one dead fish, on Saturday fishing north in The Creasant Bar area.  He also had the big fish of the tournament, a 5.2 pound smallie.  He said he had only 6 bites on Saturday, landed 5 of the 6 bites, fishing football head jigs with hula grubs.  He had a over a nine pound lead and was a sure winner unless he had a mishap and someone else brought in a good bag.  Well, the mishap happened!  He ran out of gas on the way back to the weigh in on Sunday.  Gerald said his Skeeter instruments indicated that his gas tank was 63% full when in fact it was empty.  Probably a stuck float!   Joe Mitchell and Brandon Kyler stopped and picked up his fish along with Cameron Dunn.  They were 3 minutes late for the weigh in and both Gerald and Cameron Dunn were assessed a three pound penalty for being 3 minutes late.  Without the penalty Gerald would have weighed 24.9 pounds an been the tournament winner.  Joe and Brandon were not assessed a late penalty.  Anthony Douglas left the weigh in on Sunday looking for Gerald to bring his fish to the weigh in but ran the east side of the river while Gerald was on the west side so he did not find him.   Mark Mrzena towed Gerald back to the launch after the tournament.   Joe, Brandon, Anthony and Mark all deserve praise for their commendable actions!    Doug Jorgensen, while not present, nominated Gerald for a multi year klutz award!
Finishing  third, and losing out on second because of big fish, was Keith O'Rourke.  Keith was the most consistent angler finishing with around 11 pounds both days.  Keith fished north of the Vantage launch both days.  His third place finish allowed him to strengthen his lead for the coveted Angler of the Year award.
